Advantages of Mannington's Porcelain Tile

Porcelain tile is made with special clays and minerals that are compressed and then kiln-fired at temperatures that can exceed 2400 degrees Fahrenheit. As a result, porcelain is both harder and denser than other tile products. Additionally, porcelain is frost-proof as well as highly stain-, scratch-, and water-resistant.

Porcelain tile offers other advantages, as well:

  • Better performance. Mannington porcelain tile can be installed in heavy traffic areas (Class 4 and 5), and some lines are slip-resistant and ADA approved.

  • More aesthetically pleasing. Our satin-finish tile exhibits the realistic, authentic look of stone (but without the price of real stone). Through-body construction is superior to redbody because the color is consistent through the entire tile.

  • Higher breaking strength. Porcelain contains less clay and more feldspar (a mineral) than regular ceramic tile. It’s also pressed at a higher pressure, making it 30% harder than granite.

  • Less water absorption. Porcelain tile typically absorbs less than 5% of its weight in water. This results in less staining and easier clean-up. It also means that the tile will not crack from freezing and can be used outdoors as well as indoors.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Q. What is the difference between Porcelain Tile and Ceramic Tile?
A. Porcelain tile is more scratch resistant than ceramic tile. Porcelain is made from a finer, more dense clay, which is compressed before firing, resulting in a more dense, harder body. Also, porcelain tile is fired at higher temperatures than ceramic, resulting in superior durability and stain resistance.

Q. How do I care for my Porcelain Tile floor?
A. Porcelain tile is stain-resistant requiring minimal maintenance. Simply wipe up spills with a damp cloth or sponge. Regular cleaning with clear water or a mild detergent is recommended.

Q. What is Shade Variation?
A. Any variation in color or texture from tile to tile.  Many of Mannington's porcelain tiles have a high shade variation, giving it a more natural appearance.  While no two tiles may match each other, the combination of many varying tiles creates a beautiful, unified whole.

Q. What is a Moh?
A. A Moh is a scale of hardness developed by the German mineralogist Fredrich Mohs. The scale ranges from 1 (talc) to 10 (diamond). When applied to porcelain tile, it denotes the tile's scratch resistance.  Typical values for Mannington's porcelain tiles range between 5 and 8 Mohs.
